Mismanagement?

~ What An Incredible Waste! ~ These horrifying photos were sent to me via the Oz carping grapevine at Christmas. I meant to have them on NCFB a bit sooner than this so the story was a bit more current, but I’ve had a few delays in doing so. Since then the eastern states have had a lot of flooding, so I’m not sure if this river has now refilled or not? Any updates on the situation on the lower Lachlan River will be welcome? The drying up... [Read More...]

What a hero!

~ What Was The Point To This Moronic Act? ~ You have to ask yourself, “what harm was this fish doing?”  Answer: “none!” “Cape to Cape Catchments Group Margaret River project officer Drew McKenzie said the carp had affected populations of endangered native fish.” What, by itself? I think not! What a load of shit; this is an epic piece of hypocrisy! So other introduced species like rainbow trout and redfin are okay... [Read More...]

Aussie Fully Scaled

…one of the few instances in carp fishing where size doesn’t matter! This beautiful fully scaled mirror was captured from the Yarra River in Victoria, by my Melbourne based buddy Ozzie Jack.  With an exceptionally rare beast like this weight is not the greatest issue, but for the record it went 14lb 8oz – an Aussie twenty or thirty that looks like this would be simply mind boggling! It was taken on a snowman rig presentation, with... [Read More...]

Thinking, Blanking, Thinking, Blanking! ~ Part 1

….Even I found this video boring to watch! I appologise for the poor audio (I need to get an external mic for the camera), also I didn’t bother going mad with music and effects like the last one.  I only put it on to try and emphasise how hard the fishing is here, and how the fishing on our river has become incrementally more difficult season by season as fish stocks decline. Every year I swear “this is my last season on the river“,... [Read More...]

Our Dying River ~ Part 2

….The aftermath of the hail storm, and subsequent pollution of the Canning River, Perth.  The original story I posted the first week of april on this carp fishing blog, the article can be found here: Our Dying River. Obviously, its not going to be until we’ve had some serious rain that we’ll see any significant improvement in the rivers water quality.  Or, be able to determine if anything much has survived by fishing it.  Early... [Read More...]

Our Dying River ~ Part 1

Marine Life Dying In Perth River It broke my heart to hear this sad news, and it has taken me a while to lift my spirits enough to write about it.  I first began fishing this river almost twenty-five years ago now.  Back then it looked completely different, compared to its present sorry state, which makes me feel pretty gutted to say the least.  In the mid eighties it was in a far healthier condition with a huge fish population, although certain... [Read More...]

First Autumn River Session

My 2am alarm dragged me to consciousness, and before I could rationalize the insanity of my actions I found myself hurtling down a completely deserted freeway.  By 4am I was secreted in my swim with both rods out, with a coffee in hand, staring up a brilliantly clear Southern Cross.  This may at first appear to be utter madness, but was actually a cunningly conceived plan… or so i thought? An earlier river recce (bush bash) had proven fruitless,... [Read More...]

Shopping Trolleys Outnumber Fish!

Clean this up! I was out on the canoe on Thursday for a bit of a mooch about on our local river, when I inadvertently came across a veritable graveyard for shopping trolleys! Two things amazed me, firstly that they had all obviously been there a long long time, and no one had bothered to remove them. And secondly, that they’d been dumped right next to a healthy looking colony of freshwater mussels, which were clearly visible in the shallow... [Read More...]

Carp Fishing Australia Parts 3 & 4

Hiya Peeps, It’s 42.9 degrees centigrade here at the moment, and I’ve just built up a bit of a sweat rummaging about in my shed looking for all my kit for my next fishing trip.  Armed with the barest of essentials, I will be heading off tomorrow (forecast for a humid 41 degs) into the forested wilderness of Western Australia’s southwest.  The burning question will be though; is there going to be any water in the river I’m... [Read More...]

Carp Fishing Australia On YouTube

It gives me great pleasure to be able to present to you on my blog some amazing Aussie carping footage, taken by Tomasz Pawlus and his associates.  I first became aware of these video clips as a result of a post on the Australian Freshwater Angling forum last year.  To be honest, at first I was quite surprised that a fellow Oz carper would publicize their home water so openly in this way.  Certainly something I would be reluctant do on YouTube... [Read More...]
