100th Double Landed From Same Lake!

Yes, you did read that correctly, my 100th double! He was the last fish that came to the net on yesterday’s session in ‘Ozzie Jack’s swim with my mate ‘The Kernel.’  We’d resisted the temptation to hurl in a truck load of bait like we did the previous weekend, and instead baited our markers very conservativly indeed, with just a few boilies around each, in addition to my usual happy sack (PVA bag) modus operandi.

We settle back and basked in the glorious sunshine to wait, the forecast twenty-two degrees and relativly calm winds were the best conditions I’d seen on this trip so far.  But although it looked ‘carpy‘ nothing much happened, and after four hours I’d fallen asleep and was snoring my head off in my chair.  I’d just come to, and my right handle burst to life, I leapt up on got into it a quickly as I could, being close to a snag.  It felt like a good fish, and with a bit of curry I managed to bully him away from the snag.  Whatever was on the end had taken a double 20mm boilie, so I had my fingers crossed that this might crack the 20lb barrier having picked up a much bigger bait than normal?  But alas, it wasn’t to be, and I couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed again when he only managed weigh in at 17lb 8oz – still a nice fish though, and it’d gotten us on the scoreboard at least.

I’d just recast and looked behind me to see the sky as black as ink, and looking very ominous.  A few minutes later the heavens opened and we had a thunderstorm pass overhead to keep things interesting.  The always reliable Bureau Of Meteorology didn’t see that one coming, as there was no mention of it on their site when I checked before leaving, and grabbing the brolly (for the sun) was a last minute decision!  We figured the rain might set them off to feed, and we we half right I suppose? As the deluge eased The Kernel broke his duck by landing a plump 15lb 15lb common, that had fallen to one of ‘Niblet’s Tourist Boilies’ that he’d ponced off me, and that’d only been in the water for twenty minutes!  I went on to catch an 11lb 2oz, a 13lb 2oz and lastly double one hundred, the 16lb 4oz (pictured below) not huge, yet significant being the ‘one tonner‘.

A 100 doubles from this lake sounds a lot, but taking into consideration I fished nineteen sessions there in 2008, and thirteen this year, that is only three or four fish per session.  Out of all those doubles the best has been a 19lb 12oz from last year, and a 19lb 4oz in my first week on the lake this time around.  Only half a dozen singles have shown in all, but regretably no twenties.  They are in there, but I’ve not been fortunate to hold one up to the camera, and after thirty-two sessions, a ton of bait, not to mention a considerable amount of effort to get to the lake in the first place, I think its time to move on and have a crack somewhere else…don’t you think?????
