Underwater Carp Video ~ A Capture Using Bread
I could’t wait to put this video clip by David Edwards (TheUnderwatersecrets), as he has managed film an amazing take on good old humble bread! With the growing popularity of branded bait, old fashioned and more traditional carp baits like worms, sweetcorn, and of course bread, have become less popular with session anglers. The reasons for this are obvious, such as nuisance fish nicking your bait, and anglers not wishing to frequently rebait when they’re all tucked up nice and warm and cosy in their sleeping bag. I get that, and I fully understand the evolution of boilies and their place in modern carp angling, but bread does still have its place in the sport too. Here’s the proof!
What I find a little sad is that many of the younger carp anglers have missed out this important step in their fishing career, by just going straight to shelf-life bait. Not that there is anything wrong by taking this path. It just means they’ve missed out on a very exciting (and mostly forgotten) part of the art of carp angling. In the 1970′s ‘crusting‘ was one of the most popular methods of carping on my home waters. My earliest experiences of carp fishing were using bread, either crusting on the surface, anchoring a crust when the wing was unfavourable, or just float fishing with breadflake or bread paste. What could be simpler? Sure, you couldn’t climb into you bivvy and sleep all night and wait for your buzzer to go off when crusting, it wasn’t like that at all. For a start back then none of my mates had bivvys or buzzers, even owning a 36″ brolly in those days seemed luxurious. We just stayed awake all night straining our eyes in the gloom to watch for our crust to be slurped off the surface, or our Betalight float to disapear!
A nostalgic as it sounds I’ve had some of my best ever sessions on bread, crusting at night, or as I do now, fishing a large waggler with a small Starlight and a big blob of breadflake. My early days on crust in the UK accounted for many fish, albeit none of them very big. In more recent times here in Australia I’ve stalked and caught some hard fighting wild koi with nothing more than a single loaf of sliced bread. Half of it liquidized for ground bait, the rest for hookbaits. In two very short back to back sessions I had five koi with a single rod, two were good mid doubles, and two were twenties going 22lb 14oz and 23lbs respectively.
Inspired by David’s video I intend to get out ASAP and give the boilies a rest for a bit and have a crack with the bread for a while. It has just started to rain here after a very long hot spell; fifty days over 30 degrees and months without a drop. As soon as I’ve posted this my head will be in the tackle box and I’ll be making up some bready rigs for my next session. Check out the rest of his videos, but this one I love… enjoy!
Happy hippo hunting

Wow. What a really cool video. Wish I had the funds to get hold of underwater camera equipment and do a little experiment like that.
Back to bread. same for me was what I started with. I loved nothing more than fishing with a piece of crusty bread on the top. To be honest that is still my favourite method now and I am planning to do exactly that this Sunday on my local lake as long as there is little wind and rain.
