Happy Sacks :-)

Any doubts I’ve ever had about using PVA bags have now completely evaporated with this trip.  I’ve used them many times before, but to be honest have not always persisted with them , when perhaps I should’ve. However, I’ve found that treading lightly, with a minimalist approach to baiting (as opposed to hurling in a 100kgs of bait, like we did last weekend!  What a couple of Twonks!!) has come up with the goods.  At three entirely different Melbourne venues I’ve caught within the first couple of chucks, just using a humble chod rid, PVA bag containing pellets and crushed boilies, and of course the ever faithful ‘tourist boilie‘ (the recipe for which appears in an earlier post).

Obviously, I’m not casting blind, and some thought and exploration of the swim has preempted fishing it. Having done this, and then fishing with this set up I’m pretty confident in catching something, and nine times out of ten it works – weather permitting that is.  As far as pellets go, any of the ones you find in the local tackle shop are okay, like the burley pellets containing either aniseed or pilchard oil as additives.  I’ve still got about 25kg of the barramundi pellets to wade through, so I’m just using them with some boilie chops, or crushed boilies for some extra scent in the bag.  What with the combination of some  unseasonaly cold weather here slowing the fishes metabolism, and the fact that they have a bit of ‘rumpy pumpy’ in mind, with spawning imminent.  I think putting out a half decent bait with some added attraction around it is clearly the way to go, and PVA bags are an excellent way of achieving this.

Having tried loads of different brands of PVA over the years, I’ve finally settled on 4Thirds Textured PVA Bags. They are very easy to work with, and don’t stick together in the pack like some brands tend to do as they age. As the label says, “long range” – well let me tell you I’ve been doing my best Leslie Moncrief beach casting to get to my markers in some absolute hooligan headwinds, and I’ve not had one bag split or fall to bits on my psycho chuck – which is quite amazing.  They are a top bit of kit, and I highly recommend that you try some, 4Thirds prices and mail-order service is simply awesome as well!

This simple technique has so far accounted for 32 doubles since my arrival here, including a 5 X 15lb’ers, 2 X 16lb’ers, 1 X 17lb’er, 3 X 18lb’ers and a 19lb’er – the twenty is next, ha, ha!!!

Happy hippo hunting :-)
